So our girl Sansa has been real busy in the marriage department because she debuts wedding outfit number 2 while tying the knot with Ramsey. Other than his sadistic, psychotic, murderous, and violent personality Ramsey is alright I guess? We’re back in the North, with snow on the ground and the weather as cold and brutal as Ramsey’s nonexistent heart, and Sansa is bundled up for an outside wedding.
The thick quality of her gown is perfect for a chilly night, and the textured braided material gives this look an extra wow factor. Because the color scheme is pretty simple with monochromatic winter whites, the texture of the material, the clasp details, and fur shrug add more visual interest to her outfit. We also see that her hair is done in a chic braided updo, which is different from her usual style of loose waves.
I love how her braids act like a headband, and it ties together the look because of how it closely resembles the fabric. Also, her hair works well pulled up because of the high collar of her shirt—if her hair was down, it would’ve been too overwhelming. These pieces from Alexander McQueen’s 2016 F/W RTW collection were similar to Sansa’s wedding gown, from the textured material to the fur lined coats to the color scheme. These looks are ready for any winter formal affair—they seem amazingly warm, while still feeling sophisticated.
Weddings were in abundance over the last couple of seasons, and wedding episodes are bittersweet for me because on one hand, I love the bridal costuming, but on the other hand, someone almost always dies (Red Wedding, anyone?). Sansa’s marriage to Tyrion was one of the more bizarre twists that Tywin conjured up, but we’re lucky that beneath all the scheming and dreams of political domination, Tyrion is actually a decent guy and not evil scum of the earth like Joffrey.
Back to the dress: it’s AMAZING. The intricate stitching and embroidery is difficult to truly appreciate until you see it up close.
On a television screen, the symbolism that’s depicted in the fabric seems barely noticeable, but in these images it takes center stage. The wolf, trout, and lion are all animals from the Stark, Tully, and Lannister houses, respectively, and symbolic of the constant war between them. The fact that the lion takes up the entirety of the Victorian-esque collar at the center of the neck suggests that Sansa should put her new Lannister name above her familial ties to Stark and Tully.
The hip details resemble the cap sleeves, and the wolf motif is repeated on the harness-like straps crossing in the front. Between the pattern and sheen of the fabric, the delicate beadwork and embroidery, and well-placed pleats, this wedding gown is seriously perfection.
So apparently I have some rewatching to do, because I almost completely forgot about Tyrion’s foreign lover Shae and her major betrayal when she sleeps with his dad Tywin and lies on the witness stand knowing she’s sending him to his death. From that sentence, you’re probably thinking, “How could you forget all that?” And the truth is I have no idea, because that was one drama-filled season 4 finale.
Shae was someone I was rooting for because everyone else in King’s Landing wanted her dead and gone, including Tywin (ironically) and scheming Cersei. We see her grow into becoming a real political player when tasked with making herself invisible, so she won’t come to harm. Shae’s outfits mirror the fact that she’s foreign because they’re so unlike the proper, structured gowns we usually see in King’s Landing. And we can tell she’s obsessed with pink, because well, the photos just speak for themselves.
The girl clearly knows her color and just ran with it; literally all of her outfits are a different shade of the same hue.One look that she often repeats is this draped and flowy piece, giving it a backless effect. It’s very Greecian inspired and as I mentioned before, the complete opposite of the often stiff and heavy-looking brocade and satin gowns we normally see.
The subtle embroidered belt gives Shae’s dress a hint of detail without upstaging the drapery. It also has a similar collar like Missandei’s dresses, but less severe where it’s not a choker. I thought it was interesting to note that the only time she wears a more modest, more traditional wrap dress with sleeves is when she is testifying in front of citizens of King’s Landing. That was probably Tywin’s clever strategizing.
I thought these pieces from Stella McCartney’s Resort 2016 collection conveyed the same shape and billowing effect of Shae’s dresses.
I have yet to touch on Missandei’s style on this blog, and I regret it because first of all, Nathalie Emmanuel is so incredibly beautiful and secondly, her character Missandei is one of GoT’s hidden treasures. It would be easy for her to be completely overshadowed by Dany, but her sincerity and genuine goodness is refreshing against the violence and chaos of the show. And plus I love the whole romantic subplot between her and Grey Worm, although I’m not entirely sure how that would work out.
The first time we meet Missandei in season 2, she is a slave translator in Astapor before being rescued by Dany. Because of her position as a slave she has a literal leather and metal collar around her neck that starkly contrasts her soft yellow gown. Even after she becomes free, her collared, halter-like dresses have become part of her signature style and carried on throughout the seasons.
This silhouette works great with her petite figure, and shows off her toned arms and shoulders. Sometimes halter dresses can overwhelm with too much fabric and look like a tent, but a belted look defines the waist. Even without a belt to cinch everything in, the color blocking gives a similar illusion.
She’s also been known to break out some two piece looks, with cropped tops and full length skirts that I just wanted to throw in here because she looks absolutely amazing. Can you tell I have a little bit of a girl crush?
Balmain is one designer I’ve noticed who alludes to this same silhouette, and I think Missandei would definitely appreciate. In both his Spring and Fall RTW collections, Olivier Rousteing incorporated high necklines, wrapped tops, and collared necklaces that would work well with her style.
Sansa is a character in this show where her wardrobe is very representative of her personality. Starting from the very first season, she is the antithesis of her tomboy sister Arya. Her outfits often have pastel pinks, lavenders, and blues that make her so demure and are appropriate for her many damsel in distress moments (a.k.a. her entire physically and mentally abusive relationship with Joffrey). They also did a great job in portraying her youth and naiveté because I think sometimes we forget how young everyone’s characters actually are—she gets married twice before the age of 18—meanwhile I haven’t been on a single date in five months. But I digress.
Sansa makes quite the transformation with this little number, and I think it shows how much she’s grown up and how she is taking control over her own life, not letting the politics between men determine her fate. So thus emerges Dark Sansa.
It looks like Sansa went ham at The Vale’s local Hot Topic, but I love this look because it diverges from her typical feminine style. You never see her wear black, let alone be covered head to toe in it, but the feathers provide a shimmery glint and texture, so it doesn’t seem entirely monochromatic. The corset gives the dress a structural element, and we see the same sleeve detail repeated from Dany’s look, except even more drastic with feathers and a high collar.
The asymmetrical statement necklace might be a little much for me, but I get that she was going for drama, and it fills the empty space created from the deep V neckline.
Dior is one designer I thought underwent a similar transformation from feminine and floral to dark and dramatic with their Fall RTW collection. This collection was a contrast from the soft, flowy and bright looks the design house normally puts down the runway, especially with the black lipstick models were sporting. Here are some looks from the show that had a metamorphosis effect similar to Sansa’s.
Yes, I know it’s been a while since I updated this blog. Almost three years to be exact. And let me tell you a lot has happened since in GoT since season 2 where I left off—Theon figuratively and literally lost his manhood, Tyrion is on the run after being accused of killing sadistic teen King Joffrey (false) and murdering his own father Tywin (actually true), Dany is having a difficult time controlling her empire and her dragons, and we kind of lost Bran at some tree in The North. A lot of people also died in between, but it’s George R.R. Martin we’re talking about, so you already knew that.
To get everyone pumped for Season 6 in April, I’ll be counting down to the premiere by recapping the best style moments from seasons past. From Dany’s infamous (and very on trend) cut out dress to both of Sansa’s wedding dresses—like I said, we have a lot of catching up to do—I’ll be counting down my favorite outfits that truly showcase why Michele Clapton is a costuming genius.
First up is Dany’s previously mentioned cut out dress.
The belly baring aspect of this dress looks a little like Dany’s trying to hit up a club with gal pal Missandei and scruffy heartthrob Daario Naharis, but I’m totally a fan. The pleated silk at the bottom still makes it elegant, offsetting the fact that she’s showing more skin. It also makes the outfit more dynamic by balancing the soft silk with the severity of the sleeves. The criss cross effect carries over to the back, which is such a flattering silhouette and slimming in real life, and the scaled top and shoulder details pay homage to her dragons without going overboard.
While this isn’t her first venture into the world of cut outs, it’s definitely her most daring outfit. At first glance, I thought it looked a little strange that her belly button is framed by the crossing straps, but now I think it makes it more playful. Just because Dany’s a boss ass Queen and has a realm to rule, doesn’t mean she can’t experiment with her femininity and try some new looks . I mean, can you imagine her in a pant suit? That was a rhetorical question.
With the haute couture designers debuting their collections in Paris last month, I thought this gown by Chinese designer Yiqing Yin perfectly embodied Dany’s aesthetic: from the neutral color scheme to the braided rope detail and drapery, I could definitely see her giving out some orders from her throne in this amazing dress. Yes, this is a fashion blog and I’ve been focusing specifically on clothes, but anyone who watches the show simply cannot ignore the masterful hairstyles worn by the Game of Thrones women. This post goes out to the incredible hair team of GoT and, of course, the fantastic actresses who can seriously work any crazy up-do and still look fierce.
Daenerys definitely sparked the braid trend for the rest of the show. Especially when she becomes Khaleesi, the braiding becomes more prevalent and more intricate. Even after she is abandoned by most of the Dothraki clan, she keeps on braiding (as we see in seasons 2 and 3). They turn out to be convenient for keeping her long platinum locks out of her face when enduring the constant change of elements. I’m also in love with that claw necklace. What an intimidation factor.
The Khaleesi is Grace Kim’s favorite character, and the rest of the GoT nation is probably in agreement. Kim is a student at the University of Florida and majors in public relations.
“She’s my favorite because of how bold she is and how she never takes no for an answer. And probably in real life that would get her killed, but I think it’s pretty cool all of the things she can accomplish,” Kim said.
“I think a lot of her stuff is really pretty because it’s feminine and romantic, but I actually focus more on her hairstyles. I think it’s cool that they incorporate a lot of braids.”
