Roberto Cavalli Evokes Highgarden

Wearing these jewels, it’s easy to picture yourself basking in Highgarden, the southern realm of Westeros and home of House Tyrell. The Tyrell’s sigil is a rose which reflects the lush groves, flora and fauna that Highgarden is known for. Their house words are even “Growing Strong,” an obvious nod to their reputable gardens.

This collection of jewelry by Roberto Cavalli evokes the scenery of Highgarden through its floral characteristics and bright coloring. Any of these pieces would look right at home if they were ever worn by Lady Margaery Tyrell. Margaery is famous for wearing many shades of blue gowns and all of these accessories have hints of blue or would compliment the hue. While she is in King’s Landing, these necklaces, rings and earrings would allow her to pay homage to Highgarden while still wearing jewels fit for a future queen.

Although no doubt, this jewelry seems maybe a tad too decadent and colorful given the sometimes dreary feel of the show, it is a modern twist to the Tyrell’s fashion inspired by the descriptions of Highgarden.

Below are some of Margaery’s clothes from Game of Thrones to see how she incorporates the landscape of Highgarden into her wardrobe. Shoutout to Margaery for her dedication to cleavage-bearing blue dresses and wavy half ponytails. You go girl.

Cersei Lannister’s Red Dress

The colors red and gold are synonymous with the Lannisters, a house known for its ostentatious wealth and power. It’s no surprise that we see the colors of Cersei’s sigil replicated in her wardrobe. The Lannisters are the richest family in the Seven Kingdoms and reside in their formidable domain of Casterly Rock as well as King’s Landing.  Cersei is the Queen of Westeros and then later Queen Regent in King’s Landing, so these high-ranking positions are taken into consideration with what she wears.

Cersei is the character everyone loves to hate, which is also why red is a perfect color for this villainous lady. Who knew being bad could look so good?

The crimson dress pictured has large sleeves and a V neckline, only constricting slightly at the belted waist. There are almost no formfitting clothes in the show because it is supposed to convey a medieval feel, but a cinched waist allows the women in GoT to show their figures without being too revealing. The waist on this dress is also reminiscent of the metal waist details on Dany’s gown in the post below.

Adorned with gold embroidery and a gold lion necklace, Cersei truly embodies House Lannister with this outfit. Surprisingly however, this is a rather casual style in comparison to some of the other clothing she wears. Normally for more grandiose occasions her hair is worn up and her gowns are even more lavish, sometimes giving off the shimmering appearance of satin or silk instead of cloth, which is what the dress pictured above seems to be made of.

This Marchesa dress worn by actress Olivia Munn at the 2013 Oscars is absolutely Lannister certified. Although it is strapless, it has the perfect touch of gold embroidery on the bodice and, like Cersei’s dress, it hugs her waist before it drapes into a flowing train. This regal gown is a modern take on Lannister fashion and undoubtedly fit for the Iron Throne.

Daenerys Targaryen’s Qartheen Gown

Sources 1 & 2

This blue flowy gown that Daenerys (Dany) wore in Qarth during Season 2 has become an iconic piece of clothing from Game of Thrones. It showcases the wealth and power of Qarth through the fine fabric and gold embellishments, but also the mystery surrounding the city with its ethereal and whimsical look.

This dress conveys the paradise that Qarth was to Dany and her Dothraki followers because without the city they would have perished in the Red Waste. However, the metal caging around the waist and shoulders, while ornate and delicate, also convey the message of danger. It possibly foreshadows her being trapped and chained in the House of the Undying after finding her dragons.

The blue reflects the ocean that Qarth so much relies on with its trading ships and its port. Qarth was made into such a wealthy city through trading and this is shown by the the people’s elegant and expensive looking clothing and jewelry. All of the people in this city wear the finest fabrics with gold threading, beading and embroidery which truly displays the magnificence of this city on the sea.

Marchesa was a designer that instantly came to mind because, like the fashions in Qarth, their designs are extremely ornate and ethereal. Here are some Marchesa looks inspired by Qarth and Dany’s gown:

The two gowns on the left are more simplistic than their couture counterparts, but it was difficult to leave them out. All of the above Marchesa creations exemplify Qarth and accurately depict the vividness and detail of Dany’s dress.

About This Blog

I am a rising sophomore majoring in journalism at the University of Florida. For my Multimedia Writing summer class, I was required to come up with a blog topic that I was genuinely interested in.

This is the concept I came up with: discussing and analyzing outfits and fashion from the HBO show Game of Thrones. In each post I will discuss the style of a certain realm or character in depth and post links to modern alternatives inspired by each outfit. I created this blog because of my passion for clothes and also because of my incurable obsession of all things Game of Thrones.

The styling and costumes are pivotal to the show and part of the reason why it is critically acclaimed and such a hit with the fans. The fashions are specific to each region, and the whole costuming department has done a fantastic job bringing the various characters and locations to life.

Through this blog I will highlight the unique fashions in Game of Thrones, provide modern alternatives to outfits and also get insight from other Game of Thrones fans about their favorite looks from the show.

Feedback and opinions are always appreciated!
