“He’s witty, smart—and short.” – Chris Rivera, student

Christopher Rivera, 19, a rising sophomore at Florida State University (boo), started watching Game of Thrones two years ago when it first debuted. Tyrion Lannister is his favorite character because “he’s witty, smart and short.” Rivera’s response when prompted about his favorite looks from Tyrion? “I like his poofy pants and his poofy shirts.” Honestly, an expected answer when asking a man about fashion. Below is the rest of my Q&A with Rivera as we talk about Tyrion, GoT costuming and, of course, the Iron Throne.

Q: How does the costuming contribute to the show?

A: The costuming gives the show that otherwordly feel… and it really helps set you in the scene of where everything is going to take place. It makes it easy [for viewers] to meld with the environment and let yourself really feel what’s going on.

Q: What do you like about the costuming or what makes it interesting?

A: The costumes are really based on the surroundings the [characters] encounter and it communicates a sort of necessity to us, so we know it’s necessary to wear these to survive in their respective environments.

Q: If there was one piece of clothing or accessory or prop from the show that you would want in real life what would it be?

A: The Iron Throne. Because I would just sit in it and look badass.

Q: Do you have another one? Because a lot of people would choose that, is there anything more specific?

A. The Hand of the King pin. (Which is available for purchase here)

Q: Why is Tyrion your favorite? What do you admire about him?

A: In King’s Landing they’re all looking to defeat you or humiliate you in some way because it’s such a cutthroat hotbed of politics, and he shows everyone that he’s a force to be reckoned with.

Calvin Klein’s 2013 Men’s Fall Collection had some enviable outerwear which we all know would spark Tyrion’s interest; he is famous for his long quilted jackets and leather vests. I felt like this men’s collection was pretty spot on in regards to the dark umber and black coloring as well as the various textures, but let me know what you think by commenting below.
