This blue flowy gown that Daenerys (Dany) wore in Qarth during Season 2 has become an iconic piece of clothing from Game of Thrones. It showcases the wealth and power of Qarth through the fine fabric and gold embellishments, but also the mystery surrounding the city with its ethereal and whimsical look.
This dress conveys the paradise that Qarth was to Dany and her Dothraki followers because without the city they would have perished in the Red Waste. However, the metal caging around the waist and shoulders, while ornate and delicate, also convey the message of danger. It possibly foreshadows her being trapped and chained in the House of the Undying after finding her dragons.
The blue reflects the ocean that Qarth so much relies on with its trading ships and its port. Qarth was made into such a wealthy city through trading and this is shown by the the people’s elegant and expensive looking clothing and jewelry. All of the people in this city wear the finest fabrics with gold threading, beading and embroidery which truly displays the magnificence of this city on the sea.
Marchesa was a designer that instantly came to mind because, like the fashions in Qarth, their designs are extremely ornate and ethereal. Here are some Marchesa looks inspired by Qarth and Dany’s gown:
The two gowns on the left are more simplistic than their couture counterparts, but it was difficult to leave them out. All of the above Marchesa creations exemplify Qarth and accurately depict the vividness and detail of Dany’s dress.
